It is often claimed by figures on the left that the ‘far-right’ (by which they often mean nationalists) exist in their own ecosystem. Simultaneously, there is a constant call from some figures within these circles for the creation of a ‘parallel society’, or a political ecosystem that exists independently from other political factions. After watching how nationalist politics in Britain has operated for a few years, the conclusion that I have come to is that the nationalist ‘ecosystem’ and ‘parallel society’ already exists, and its existence is actually the cause of a great deal of its political impotence.
The ‘demo’ scene
A frequent staple of nationalism over the last 5-10 years has been demonstrations, protests, and short-lived attempts at creating street movements that can function as entities in their own right. I have also attempted to do this back in 2023.
The objective reality of this ‘scene’ is actually protests, demonstrations and street movements that exist largely for their own sake, and largely to provide a long-distance social outlet for the people in them. They very rarely involve people that actually live in a particular area or have any particular connection to the issue being protested about. This isn’t because ‘local people’ disagree with the general themes, but rather because they see no point in aligning themselves with people who seem to exist totally outside of society and thus have no real influence or impact, and with whom they will have no ongoing interaction or relationship. Instead, they are overwhelmingly dominated by a travelling faction of professional ‘protestors’ who although they are relatively politically like-minded, are predominantly there for their own individual benefit.
This is why despite repeating the same activities for years, or even having the same protests over and over again, or the same demonstrations, it leads to no development, improvement, or growth. The events themselves are the only goal, and self-perpetuation is all they are capable of. They never develop into real political power. This part of the nationalist ecosystem is that it provides a social outlet for people who want to be able to engage with a certain social crowd.
Content creation and social media
The main product of the nationalist ecosystem that has been created is in the form of content and entertainment to be consumed. This is either social media posts, media, blogs, articles or in the form of physical entertainment like ‘Unite the Kingdom’. Even though these things often have political themes, they seldom serve any political purpose except by accident, and instead their primary purpose is to produce something for people to consume. The consumption leads to profit in the form of donations, ad revenue, or similar. In the case of media, the propaganda doesn’t exist to further a political goal, but rather it exists as a form of entertainment in the same way as a television show or film.
‘Auditing’, ‘Youtubing’, and ‘Streaming’, have become staple activities of this nationalist ecosystem, but they are only ever providing video content to the same pre-selected audience. And many of the people doing it wrongly conflate social media views with genuine political influence, and are hit with a harsh reality whenever they try to prove otherwise.
Isolation
The end result of this nationalist ecosystem and parallel political environment, is that everyone in it becomes completely isolated from not just every other political faction, but also from wider society. It becomes impossible to form alliances or have mutually beneficial relationships with anyone outside of this ecosystem. Outcomes like winning elections become completely unattainable because absolutely nobody outside of the nationalist ecosystem has any interaction with anyone in it, and so dreads the idea of them having any kind of authority. They see them as completely sectarian and almost certain to abuse any power that they have for their own sectarian interests.
As much as many nationalists are clamouring for the creation of a parallel society which will enable them to advance their interests, the truth is that many of them already live in one, and they hate it, and it’s the reason why they can’t ever advance their own interests.
Furthermore, as much as many nationalists will complain that they are isolated and excluded from mainstream society, by trying to constantly create parallel institutions and a separate political ecosystem, the truth is that they have done it to themselves.
The Way Out
In order to achieve a genuine National revolution and the implementation of a National Agenda, it necessary not just to escape this ecosystem, but to intentionally destroy it. As long as the option of engaging in an echo chamber of pre-vetted, pre-screened people, and creating content for a captive audience, exists, then it will continue to be the option that most people within nationalist politics take. And the only way to actually grow the nationalist cause beyond that echo chamber, is to make it accessible to people who exist outside of it, and have meaningful relationships with people who aren’t already in it.
If nationalists want to do things that are beneficial to their local communities, they MUST do them in conjunction with people outside of their own friendship or political circles. Instead of bussing people in to engage in low-level community activism, they must find local people, even people who might politically disagree with them, and work with those people instead. Hard work, genuine selflessness, and a demonstration of the value of their ideology will do more to persuade someone to adopt it than anyone else. Political challengers have to be seen not as people to be avoided, but as people to first and foremost be persuaded.
Nationalists should go and engage with genuine pre-existing authorities, whether that is public services, residents associations, community associations, even officials from other parties. There is no path to taking power over those things which involves just being parachuted into the top position having never set foot in the room before.
Nationalists must not hide from the mainstream media either, even if it means having to deal with difficult questions or genuine attack. After all, if they cannot withstand genuine opposition then they will never succeed anyway, so it is just as well for them to be destroyed in the first instance rather than waste anyone’s time.
Nationalists must not spend all of their energy trying to create their own parallel entities and instead spend more time trying to involve themselves with political, economic and social entities that already exist, and that already involve large numbers of people. It doesn’t matter if those people don’t always agree, the way to win those people over is not by voicing ideas, but through demonstrating meaningful contributions and SHOWING, not telling, the value of National ideals.
If Nationalists want to control the direction of society, then the first step is to be part of it.
